Do you know where you’re heading? Paul wasn’t so sure about the Corinthians... This week, Rev Michael Hands begins our new series journeying through Paul’s first letter to the church in Corinth. Acknowledging the corrective nature of much of 1 Corinthians, this message unpacks the cultural and historical context of the letter’s recipients, diving into Paul’s opening exhortations to the Corinthians in an epistle that, while not written to us, was written for us. Paul’s appeal to the Corinthians, before bringing rebuke or correction, is to realign their ‘true North’. He reminds them of the identity they have received, not achieved, in Christ - one that calls them holy and sanctified - and encourages them to live from that identity. Ultimately, Paul points to the return of Jesus as our great hope, and to God’s faithfulness to keep the Corinthians until that day.
